Preseason MIAA baseball and softball polls announced
The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) preseason baseball and softball coaches’ polls have been released. The Comet baseball team was picked eighth, while the softball team was chosen seventh. Defending MIAA champions Adrian College for baseball and Alma College for softball have been selected as the preseason favorites.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) preseason baseball and softball coaches’ polls have been released. The Comet baseball team was picked eighth, while the softball team was chosen seventh. Defending MIAA champions Adrian College for baseball and Alma College for softball have been selected as the preseason favorites.
The baseball team welcomes back 10 letterwinners from last year’s team. The Comets will be led by seniors Sean Alexander, a pitcher from Fenton High School, Austin Clark, a catcher from Ossineke and Alpena High School, Nick McCleary, a pitcher from Battle Creek and Harper Creek High School, and Tyler Olinske, a third baseman from Negaunee High School.
Baseball poll results (number of first-place votes): 1. Adrian (5) 9 points, 2. Hope (3) 11, 3. Calvin 23, 4. Albion 24, 5. Trine 33, 6. Alma 39, 6. Kalamazoo 39, 8. Olivet 46.
The softball team returns nine letterwinners, including six starters, from the 2011 team. Olivet will be led by senior captains Rachel Cook, a pitcher from Traverse City and Central High School, and Christine Daub, a catcher from Hudson High School.
Softball poll results (number of first-place votes): 1. Alma (2) 14 points, 2. Adrian (4) 17, 2. Trine (3) 17, 4. Hope 28, 5. Saint Mary’s 38, 6. Albion 44, 7. Olivet 47, 8. Calvin 55, 9. Kalamazoo 64.
Both teams will open the 2012 season at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. The baseball team will play eight games from March 11-19, while the softball team will play 12 games from March 14-20. The MIAA Softball Tournament will take place May 3-4 at the conference champion. The 2012 MIAA Baseball Tournament will be held May 9-11.
