Ball’s pitching gem helps baseball defeat Salve Regina, 8-1

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Sophomore Jake Ball (Cadillac) allowed only six hits in seven innings as the Olivet College baseball team defeated Salve Regina (R.I.) University, 8-1, today at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Comets scored the only two runs they would need in the top half of the first inning. The first three batters walked and the first two came around to score. Olivet added to its lead with a run in the third inning. The Seahawks scored their only run in the fourth inning. The Comets stretched their lead to 6-1 run when they scored three runs in the fifth inning. Olivet capped its scoring with single tallies in both the sixth and seventh innings.
At the plate, the Comets collected nine hits. Junior shortstop Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) went 3-for-4, with two triples and a single. He also scored two runs. Junior Andrew Brawley (Niles) drove in three runs and stole three bases. Making his collegiate debut, freshman Aaron Kreiger (South Haven) had two hits.
On the mound, Ball picked-up the win after giving up just one run on six hits. He struck out six batters and walked only one. Freshman David Hernandez (Lansing/Eastern) threw the final two innings, allowing just one hit and striking out two.
The Comets will take tomorrow off and will play Elms (Mass.) College Friday morning at 9 a.m.
