FORT MYERS, Fla. – Senior Sean Alexander (Fenton) threw a complete game, seven-hitter to lead the Olivet College baseball team to a 6-3 win over Otterbein (Ohio) University at the Gene Cusic Classic and played at the Player Development Complex in Fort Myers, Fla.
The Comets went ahead 2-0 with a pair of runs in the second inning. Freshman Joey Myers (Holt) singled and junior Justin Pitt (Imlay City) walked to start the inning, and a groundout moved them up one base. Sophomore Andrew Engle (Greenville) came through with a RBI-single to score Myers and advance Pitt to third base. Senior Tyler Olinske (Negaunee) then hit a sacrifice fly, scoring Pitt.
The Cardinals answered by taking a 3-2 lead with a three-run third inning. Olivet grabbed the lead back, 5-3, when it manufactured three runs in the fifth. Pitt had a sacrifice fly to score junior Randy Young (Wixom/Walled Lake Western), senior Austin Clark (Ossineke/Alpena) hit a RBI-double to score junior Andrew Brawley (Niles) and Engle grounded out to score Myers.
The Comets capped their scoring with an unearned run in the seventh. After the rough third inning, Alexander allowed only one Otterbein runner to get in scoring position and only four total base runners. Olivet's defense also did commit any errors.
Offensively, the Comets recorded 10 hits. Clark, Pitt and freshman Aaron Kreiger (South Haven) each had two hits. Clark's two hits were doubles. Myers and Pitt each scored twice. Alexander gave up the three runs on seven hits, while striking out five and walking only one batter.
Olivet continues its spring break trip tomorrow against Augustana (Ill.) College. First pitch from Terry Park is 9 a.m.
