Small’s double-double leads men’s basketball team to 73-57 win over Lawrence Tech

OLIVET, Mich. – Senior Garner Small (Schoolcraft) posted a double-double (31 points and 11 rebounds) to lead the Olivet College men's basketball team to a 73-57 win over Lawrence Technological University tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet.

Garner made 11-of-21 baskets, including five 3-pointers, and four free throws for his career-high 31 points. Nine of his 11 rebounds were off the defensive glass. He dished out five assists, blocked one shot, made one steal and committed only one turnover in 34 minutes. Small has scored 20 or more points in five games this season.

Sophomore Blake Krum (Schoolcraft) scored 13 points, including three baskets from behind the arc. Junior DaunTrell Hill (Grand Rapids/Wyoming Godwin Heights) joined them in double figures with 10 points, as well as five assists.

As a team, Olivet shot 45.2 percent (28-of-62) from the floor to 40.4 percent (21-of-52) for the Blue Devils. The Comets also made four more buckets from long range, 12-4, and turned the ball over seven less times, 8-15.

In the first half, OIivet led by nine points on three occasions, with the last time being 24-15. Lawrence Tech came back with a 15-5 run to take its first lead, 30-29, since the 19:02 mark. Krum put the Comets ahead by two with a three-pointer before the Blue Devils tied the game on a tip-in basket.

Olivet grabbed the lead back on a basket but Lawrence Tech answered with a triple to go up 35-34. Hill gave the lead back to the Comets for good after he made back-to-back three-pointers. A tip-in by Small at the halftime buzzer made the score 42-35 at intermission.

The Comets started the second half with an 18-4 run to take its largest lead of the game, 60-39. The closest the Blue Devils got the rest of the way was 16 points.

Anthony Sisson paced Lawrence Tech with 15 points, while Jon Harden had 14. John Osantowski grabbed a team-leading seven rebounds.

Olivet returns to the court Saturday night when it plays a 7 p.m. game at Bethany (W.Va.) College.
