Wiseman becomes winningest men’s soccer coach in Olivet history with 2-0 victory at Albion
The Olivet College men’s soccer team beat Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College, 2-0, this afternoon at Alumni Field in Albion. With the win, Olivet Head Coach Chad Wiseman won his 44th career game to become the winningest men’s soccer coach in school history, passing Doug Booth, who had 43 wins from 1996-2000.

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's soccer team beat Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College, 2-0, this afternoon at Alumni Field in Albion. With the win, Olivet Head Coach Chad Wiseman won his 44th career game to become the winningest men's soccer coach in school history, passing Doug Booth, who had 43 wins from 1996-2000.
The Comets scored both of their goals in the first half off corner kicks. The first came in the 19th minute. Sophomore Esteban Russell (DeWitt) served the ball to the far post, where freshman Cory Werner-Hoskins (Kalamazoo/Mattawan) headed the ball back across the box to junior Adam Wright (South End, England/Walled Lake Western). Wright then finished with a goal from inside the 6-yard box.
Olivet found the back of the net a little less than seven minutes later. Junior Fred Smyser (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) sent the ball to the far post and sophomore Jon Puente (Kalamazoo/Galesburg Augusta) headed the ball past the Briton goalkeeper.
For the game, the Comets doubled-up Albion in total shots, 12-6, including a 7-2 edge in shots-on-goal. Wright and freshman Kyle Cupp (Otsego) each had three shots. Sophomores Alex Lang (West Bloomfield/Detroit Catholic Central) and Matt VanHouten (Northville) combined for the shutout in goal. Lang played the first 45 minutes and made two saves, while VanHouten was in net for the second half.
Olivet will now prepare for a key MIAA contest Saturday night at Hope College. Game time at Van Andel Soccer Stadium in Holland is 7 p.m. The game will feature two regionally-ranked teams. In the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Central Region rankings released today, the Comets moved up to No. 3 and the Flying Dutchmen slipped to No. 6.
"The guys played hard for 90 minutes today," said Wiseman. "It's always a good thing when you go on the road and take three points. We now have our full attention to Saturday's game against Hope."
