Men’s swimming team finishes in second-place Carthage College Classic
The Olivet College men's swimming team finished in second-place at the Carthage CollegeSwimming.com Classic Dec. 2-3 at the Koenitzer Aquatic Center in Kenosha, Wis. The Comets scored 958 points, which was just eight points behind the host Big Reds. Lewis (Ill.) University took third with 675 points and Lake Forest (Ill.) College was fourth with 515 points.

Highlighting Saturday's action was the performance of sophomore Brian Fiorillo (Southgate/Anderson). He led a 1-3-4-5 Olivet finish the 50 freestyle, and also broke the school record during the morning preliminaries with an NCAA "B" cut time of 20.70 seconds. Finishing in third-place was sophomore Ben Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) in 21.82 seconds, followed by seniors Mike Harden (St. Johns) and Austin Munn (Pinckney) in fourth (:21.88) and fifth (:21.96), respectively.
Also winning for the Comets were the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays. The 200 medley relay finished in 1:35.53, while the 400 freestyle relay finish in 3:12.06.
Olivet had four swimmers place in the top seven of the 100 butterfly. Freshman Georges Aoun (Barquisimeto, Venezuela/Unidad Educativa Colegio) led the way in second at 53.00 seconds. Sophomore Nick Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) was fourth in 54.03 seconds, followed by junior Nick Edgar (Lansing/Everett) in sixth (:54.29) and freshman Brandon McShane (Southgate/Anderson) in seventh (:54.81).
Freshman Phil Barone ,Jr. (Perrysburg, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) helped the Comets finish 2-3 in the 200 breaststroke, as he touched the wall second in 2:12.95 and senior Matt Marquette (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) was third in 2:14.23. Junior Josh Mauk (Battle Creek/Lakeview) placed seventh in 2:16.96.
In the 100 backstroke, Edgar was second in 53.24 seconds and McShane was fifth in 55.88 seconds. Munn finished second in the 200 freestyle in 1:44.29, and Fiorillo was seventh (1:48.67). In the 400 individual medley, Aoun placed fifth in 4:25.77, and freshman Alec Thurston (Kingsford) placed eighth in 4:26.15. Sophomore Korey Mervenne (Jenison) was Olivet's top finisher in the 1,650 freestyle, as he finished in eighth in 17:23.19.
The Comets will now concentrate on their fall semester exams and then train from Dec. 11-19 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., at the International Swimming Hall of Fame Pool. Olivet will compete against North Central (Ill.) College on Dec. 13.
