OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College softball team lost both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Concordia University this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. The Cardinals won the first game, 2-1 and rallied to win the second game, 9-6.
Both teams had zeroes in the scoring column in the first five innings. Concordia broke the drought with two runs, including an unearned run, in the top half of the sixth inning. The Comets got one run back and left the bases loaded in their half of the sixth. Junior Alison Iuelle (Kentwood/Kelloggsville) hit a double over the left fielder's head and came around to score on a single by sophomore Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley).
Olivet did not go down without a battle in the seventh. With one out, Iuelle walked to load the bases. The Cardinals got out of the jam without allowing a run after an out at home and a groundout.
For the game, the Comets out-hit Concordia, 10-6. Senior Christine Daub (Hudson) went 3-for-4, while Hurosky and sophomore Alyssa Nielsen (Greenville) had two hits apiece. In the circle, senior Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) was the hard luck loser.
In the nightcap, the two teams combined for nine runs in the first inning, with the Cardinals leading 5-4. Olivet's first four batters reached and all four came crossed the plate. Junior Ciara Santos (Lansing/Everett) had a RBI-single to plate Daub, sophomore Lauren Lenard (Dimondale/Lansing Catholic) hit a sacrifice fly to score Nielsen and junior Marlene Packer (Grand Rapids/Creston) had a two-run single to score Santos and Iuelle.
The Comets then took a 6-5 lead when they scored two runs in the fourth inning when Hurosky lined a single into the left-center gap to plate Santos and Iuelle. Concordia then took advantage of four Olivet errors to score four unearned runs in the sixth inning.
Like the first game, Olivet had four more hits than its opponent, 12-8. Cook, Nielsen, Packer and Santos each recorded two hits. Iuelle and Santos scored two runs apiece, while Hurosky and Packer each drove in two runs. Cook suffered the pitching loss, allowing all nine runs (five earned) and striking out three.
The Comets host Defiance (Ohio) College for another non-conference doubleheader next Tuesday, April 3. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
