Softball team loses twice to Trine, 10-2 and 12-0

ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College softball team dropped both games of a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheader to Trine (Ind.) University, 10-2 and 12-0, today in Angola, Ind.
The Thunder scored two runs in the first, five runs in the third and two runs in the fourth inning to take a 9-0 lead. Olivet used a two-out rally in the top half of the fifth. Junior Alison Iuelle (Kentwood/Kelloggsville) singled down the left field line, and sophomore Lauren Lenard (Dimondale/Lansing Catholic) walked. Sophomore Mary Lamp (Alpena) entered the game as a pinch runner for Lenard.
Sophomore Terri Hurosky (Nashville/Maple Valley) singled through the left-side of the infield to load the bases. Junior Marlene Packer (Grand Rapids/Creston) delivered with a double to the left-centerfield gap to score Iuelle and Lamp. Trine got a run in the sixth inning to invoke the eight-run mercy rule ending.
The Comets finished the game with six hits. Hurosky reached base safely in all three her plate appearances with a double, single and walk. Iuelle, Packer, junior Lindsey Maas (Pinckney) and sophomore Alyssa Nielsen (Greenville) each recorded one hit.
In the circle, freshman Nicole McCoy (Detroit/Mumford) got the start and allowed nine earned runs on 12 hits over three innings. Freshman Jessica Duell (Ionia) gave up one run on two hits in two innings of relief.
In the nightcap, Trine scored two runs in the first inning and one in the fourth. Trine then erupted for nine runs in the fifth inning. For the game, Olivet was limited to a pair of singles, one each by Hurosky and Iuelle in the first inning. In the circle, senior Rachel Cook (Traverse City/Central) suffered the loss. She surrendered only five earned runs on 11 hits.
The Comets will wrap-up their home schedule Saturday with a doubleheader against MIAA rival Albion College, starting at 1 p.m. Between games of the twinbill, Olivet will recognize its three seniors who will be playing in their final home game.
