Women's lacrosse team loses to Alma, 17-9
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's lacrosse team lost 17-9 to Alma College tonight under the lights at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet.
The Scots took a 2-0 lead before freshman Ana Gomez (Rochester Hills/Notre Dame Prep) won the draw and scored 15 seconds later. Alma got a goal to go ahead 3-1 but sophomore Taylor Guarnaccia (East Lansing/Haslett) answered with her first goal to make the score 3-2. The Scots then reeled off seven straight goals for a 10-2 lead. The Comets trailed 10-3 at halftime after Guarnaccia scored with 36 seconds left.
Alma only outscored Olivet by one, 7-6, in the second half. Guarnaccia had four of the Comets' goals, while sophomores Mimi Garza (Battle Creek/Pennfield) and Geri Merrell (Battle Creek/Lakeview) each scored once.
Guarnaccia finished the game with a double hat trick (six goals) to raise her season total to a team-leading 22. She also recorded team-highs in shots (10) and shots-on-goal (eight). Garza and Merrell topped the team with four ground balls apiece. Gomez won a team-leading four draw controls. Sophomore Sarah Shaw (Grand Haven) made six saves.
The Comets will travel to play Hope College Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m.
