Women’s swimming team loses to Calvin, 114-78
The Olivet College women’s swimming team dropped a 114-78 decision to defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) champion Calvin College today at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College women's swimming team dropped a 114-78 decision to defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) champion Calvin College today at the Venema Aquatic Center in Grand Rapids.
Freshman Jazmin Johnson (Grand Rapids/Northview) placed second in the 50 freestyle at 25.37 seconds. Senior Jessica Howard (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead) had the second-fastest time in the 500 freestyle at 5:32.90 and was third in the 200 freestyle in a season-best 2:02.69.
Freshman Shana Bush (Alma) finished in third-place in the 1,000 freestyle with a season-best time of 11:18.70. Junior Jana Blodgett (Sturgis) placed third in the 100 butterfly at 1:10.51. In one of the closest races of the day, freshman Kaitlin Smith (Port Huron) had the third fastest time in the 100 backstroke at 1:03.08. Seven-hundredths of a second separated the top three swimmers.
Smith, senior Caitlin Lohr (Holland/Hamilton), Johnson and Bush stopped the clock third in the 400 freestyle relay at 3:48.73. Lohr recorded the fastest split in the race at 43.65 seconds.
The Comets return to the pool Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 15-18 at the 2012 MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships at the Holland Community Aquatic Center. Action starts Wednesday night at 7 p.m. with the 800-yard freestyle relay. The other three days each have preliminaries in the morning, starting at 10 a.m. and finals in the same events, starting at 5:30 p.m.
