OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College swimming teams are set to join more than 160 teams and 8,000 athletes across the country in the 2012 "Hour of Power" Relay Tuesday, Nov. 13.
The seventh annual relay takes place in honor of Ted Mullin, a Carleton (Minn.) College swimmer, who passed away in the fall of 2006 from sarcoma, a rare soft-tissue cancer. The event will feature a practice consisting of continuous relays, any stroke, all-out swimming, for an hour, with the objective of keeping all lanes in each pool on the same length.
Swim programs from all over the United States and beyond are participating simultaneously at 5 p.m. EST/4 p.m. CST or 5 p.m. MST/4 p.m. PST. Swimming at the same time adds to the spirit and fun of the relay.
The event holds a special meaning to Olivet Head Swimming Coach Elise Knoche, as she swam at Carleton with Mullin before his untimely death. "I am excited to be able to bring the 'Hour of Power' to Olivet," said Knoche. "Ted was a great friend and teammate, with intensity for life that is reflected in the 'Hour of Power' event. Although Ted might be gone, the 'Hour of Power' allows Ted to continue to make a difference in the world by raising awareness for sarcoma."
Any funds donated during this event support research at the University of Chicago into the causes and treatment of sarcoma in young people. If you are interested in making a donation or finding out more information, please see Knoche or go to TedMullinFund.org.
