BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – Senior Kelsey Singer (Brooklyn/Columbia Central) won her singles and doubles matches to lead to the Olivet College women's tennis team to a 6-3 win over Indiana Tech in its season-opener today at the Minges Creek Athletic Club in Battle Creek.
The Comets jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles play. The No. 1 tandem of Singer and junior Caitlin LaValley (Battle Creek/Lakeview) won an 8-4 pro-set, while the No. 2 tandem of seniors Jenna Baker (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) and Jordy Bergeron (Muskegon/Mona Shores) picked-up an 8-5 pro-set win. Olivet earned the point at No. 3 doubles since the Warriors did not have enough players to fill the spot.
The teams split the six doubles matches. The Comets got the first singles point at the No. 6 flight by virtue of Indiana Tech having only five players. Singer won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, at the No. 2 flight. Freshman Megan Post (Marshall) then came from behind to win at No. 5 singles. After losing the first set 6-3, she lost only four total games over the final two sets (6-0 and 6-4) to pull out the win.
Olivet returns to the courts tomorrow afternoon when it hosts Saint Mary's (Ind.) College for its first Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) match. First serve at the MSU Tennis Facility in East Lansing is noon.
