EAST LANSING, Mich. – The Olivet College women's tennis team opened Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) play with an 8-1 loss to Saint Mary's (Ind.) College at the MSU Tennis Facility in East Lansing.
The Comets' only point came at the No. 4 singles flight, where senior Jordy Bergeron (Muskegon/Mona Shores) won in three sets. She won the first set 6-4 and then lost the second set 7-5, and bounced back to win the match tiebreaker, 10-3. To start the day, Olivet lost all three doubles matches. Bergeron and senior Jenna Baker (Battle Creek/Harper Creek) had the closest match, losing an 8-6 pro-set.
The Belles won 5-of-6 singles matches, but they did not win them without a fight from the Comets, as half of the matches went to a third-set match tiebreaker. Baker lost a hard-fought three-set match in the third singles flight for the second straight day. After losing the first set 6-0, she came back to win the second set, 6-1, to force the match tiebreaker, which she dropped by a 10-8 count. Senior Kelsey Singer (Brooklyn/Columbia Central) also fell in a three-set match in the second singles flight. She lost the first set, 6-4, won the second set, 6-2, and then fell 10-7 in the match tiebreaker.
Olivet will practice this week and then travel to Hilton Head, S.C., for four matches during its spring break trip. The Comets will play Heidelberg (Ohio) University in their first match next Sunday, March 11, at 12:30 p.m.
