Indoor track and field teams record seven first-place finishes at Trine Open
The Olivet College men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams combined to finish in first-place in seven events tonight at the Trine (Ind.) University Open.
ANGOLA, Ind. – The Olivet College men's and women's indoor track and field teams combined to finish in first-place in seven events tonight at the Trine (Ind.) University Open.
Men
The men's team produced four of the gold medal performances. Sophomore Henry Pettway (East Lansing) led a 1-2-3 Comet finish in the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.19 seconds. Behind him were freshman Damien Johnson (Battle Creek Creek/Central) in second, 7.21; and freshman Travon Tatum (Battle Creek/Lakeview) in third, 7.33.
Olivet took first-place in all three relays. The 4x200-meter relay finished in 1:33.84, while the 4x400-meter relay's time was 3:32.05, and the 4x800-meter relay crossed the line in 8:18.41. Sophomore Billyle Alman (Lansing/Okemos) finished in second-place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.03 seconds, while freshman Demetrius Washington (Berrien Springs) was second in the 400-meter run with a time of 52.71 seconds.
The Comet's best performance in the field events was by Pettway, who placed fourth in the long jump at 6.14 meters/20'1.75". Tatum was not far behind in fifth-place with a 6.05 meters/19'10.25" jump.
Women
For the women, sophomore Cassie Ciaravino (Lapeer/East) had two of Olivet's three first-place finishes. She crossed the line first in the 200-meter dash with a time of 28.23 seconds and 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.55 seconds. During the preliminaries of the hurdles, Ciaravino broke her own school record with a time of 9.43 seconds.
Also in the hurdles, junior Jenna Mayle (Ionia) placed third in 10.62 seconds. Freshman Danielle Hoffman (Parma/Western) was fourth in the 60-meter dash, finishing in 9.11 seconds.
In the field events, junior Sara Wegener (Lansing/Lansing Catholic) won the shot put with an 11.36 meter/37'3.25" throw. She was also the runner-up finisher in the weight throw with a 12.80 meter/42' toss.
Ciaravino finished second in the long jump at 5.36 meters/17'7". Freshman Lauren Easton (Jackson/Parma Western) broke the school record and placed second in the pole vault with a 2.77 meter/9'1" clearance. Hoffman also cleared the same distance to tie for the school record.
The Comets will return to Trine next Saturday, Feb. 23, for another invitational meet, starting at 10 a.m.
