Track and field teams host 2013 MIAA Jamboree
The Olivet College track and field teams hosted the 2013 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Jamboree today on the Kolassa Track and inside the Cutler Athletic Complex. The women’s team finished in sixth-place, while the men were seventh.
OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College track and field teams hosted the 2013 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Jamboree today on the Kolassa Track and inside the Cutler Athletic Complex. The women's team finished in sixth-place, while the men were seventh.
WOMEN
The Comet women collected 371 team points to finish 169 points ahead of seventh-place Trine (Ind.) University. Calvin won the team title with 941.5 points, followed by Hope, Alma, Adrian and Albion.
Cassie Ciaravino was the lone winner for Olivet, as she took first-place in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of school-record time of 16.02 seconds. She also finished second in the long jump with a 5.33 meter leap.
Sara Wegener placed in the top three in three throwing events. She was second in both the shot put (11.16m) and discus (33.39m), and third in the hammer (39.89m). Danielle Hoffman was third in the pole vault, breaking the school record with a 2.80m clearance, and teammate Lauren Easton went one progression lower (2.75m) to finish in fifth-place.
Other top 10 performances were by Jenna Mayle in the 400-meter hurdles (sixth, 1:11.49), Alex Thulin in the shot put (seventh, 9.65m) and Wegener in the javelin throw (sixth, 29.26m).
MEN
The Comet men had 391 points. The order for the top six teams were Calvin, Hope, Adrian, Albion, Alma, Alma and Trine.
Damien Johnson turned in Olivet's only first-place individual performance, as he won the 200-meter dash in 23.08 seconds. Johnson also teamed with Billyle Alman, Henry Pettway and Demetrius Washington for the top spot in the 4x100-meter relay with a season-best time of 43.17 seconds.
Johnson also placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.40 seconds. Jalen Weaver scored second-place points in the 800-meter run with a season-best time of 1:55.52. Pettway was fourth in the 100-meter dash (11.47) and fifth in the long jump (6.18m).
Other top 10 performances were by Andrew Benkovsky in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (seventh, 10:02.89), Colin Madden in the shot put (eighth, 12.16m), Pettway in the 200-meter dash (eighth, 11.47), Eddie Rogers in the high jump (eighth, 1.73m) and Washington in the 400-meter dash (eighth, 51.67).
Olivet will compete at the Grand Valley State Invitational next Saturday, April 20.
