ALBION, Mich. – Senior Bryan Carney broke The University of Olivet career, season and single game strikeout records, while fanning 18 batters in the game to help the Comets shutout Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association rival Albion College 6-0 today at Champions Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- In the first inning, senior Braden Abbott lined the first pitch he saw into the left-center field gap. He went to third on a passed ball and scored on senior Mikey Kuzara's sacrifice fly.
- In the fifth inning, three straight singles loaded the bases for the Comets. Abbott reached on a fielder's choice but two runners came around to score.
- In the eighth inning, two singles and hit batter filled out the bases. Freshman Ryan Wiggins laced a single off the right field fence to score two runs. Senior Owen Smith then hit a sacrifice fly to stretch the Comet lead to 6-0.
FOR THE COMETS
- Carney scattered two hits and three walks over eight innings to earn the win and improve his season record to 6-2.
- Junior Logan Lewis pitched a hitless ninth inning.
- At the plate, senior Nate Droste went 2-for-3.
- Abbott scored two runs and drove in two runs.
BEYOND THE BOX SCORE
- Carney's strikeout totals are now 103 for this season and 269 in his career. He passed Chris Gumper who had 97 during the 1996 season and 260 from 1993-96. Carney broke his own single game record. He struck out 17 in the Comets' season-opener against Earlham (Ind.) College.
- Carney's 18 punchouts in today's game are the second-most by a pitcher in a MIAA game. The record is 20 by Jim Deters from Calvin University on March 29, 2005.
