HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first six innings were a pitcher's duel between Olivet senior righty Bryan Carney and Kalamazoo lefty Carson Orvis.
- The Comets broke through with three runs in the seventh inning. Senior Owen Smith reached on a throwing error by the third baseman. Senior Isaac Moore walked on a full-count pitch. Senior Tyler Hall poked the ball down the left field line to score Smith from second base. Senior Nate Droste followed with a single to load the bases.
- Senior Braden Abbott beat out a double play ball to score Moore and advance Hall to third base. Junior EJ Suggitt hit the ball back to the pitcher, but when he threw the ball to second base was wild, allowing Abbott to get to the base safely. Senior Mikey Kuzara hit a sacrifice fly to score Hall.
- After Kalamazoo batters went down 1-2-3 in the top of eighth, Olivet three insurance runs in its half of the frame. Junior Will Myrick was hit by a pitch and went to second when Smith walked. A pickoff attempt at second sailed into the outfield to move Myrick up to third base. Moore drew another walk to fill the bases. Hall then hit the ball past a drawn-in infield to score Myrick. Droste hit into a double play but Smith came around to score. Abbott's batted ball was then thrown erroneously to score Moore.
- The Hornets scored an unearned run in the ninth inning.
