UOlivet downed in MIAA doubleheader against Calvin

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The University of Olivet softball team fell to Calvin University in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) twinbill, 11-3 and 13-1, today at the Cornerstone University Softball Field.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- After the Knights scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Comets responded with three runs in the top of the second. Junior Morgan Rachow started the scoring with a solo home run. Later in the inning, senior Corina Hernandez hit a two-run double to score juniors Hailey Wenke and Kaitlyn Witkowski.
- Calvin ended the game by scoring nine unanswered runs – three in the second, one in the third, three in the fifth and two in the sixth – to post the 11-3 mercy-rule win.
- At the plate, both Hernandez and Rachow went 2-for-3. Wenke stole two bases. Freshman Elliott Jarvi suffered the pitching loss, yielding 11 runs (eight earned) on 10 hits and six walks over five innings.
GAME 2 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Knights plated one run in the second inning and two runs in the second inning for a 3-0 lead. Olivet scored its lone run in the last part of the second. Rachow led off with a single and hustled around the bases to score on a sophomore Kyleigh Ramos' double.
- Calvin exploded for eight runs on five hits and three Comet errors in the fourth frame. The Knights capped their scoring with two runs in the fifth.
- Olivet was held to three hits – singles by Rachow and Wenke, and double by Ramos. Rachow also walked in her second plate appearance. Sophomore Alisha Gahn was charged with the pitching loss after allowing eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits and four walks over the first three and one-third innings.

- The Comets play a doubleheader next Thursday, April 23, at defending MIAA champion Trine (Ind.) University. First pitch from game one is set for 3 p.m.
