Kamali selected MIAA Wrestler of the Week
HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – The University of Olivet senior Benyamin Kamali has been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Wrestler of the Week. He is receiving this recognition for a second time this season.
Wrestling at 125 pounds, Kamali opened the Comets' dual match against Adrian College with a 10-2 win over Adrian Rosas. He started the match with a takedown and two-point near fall in the first period. In the second period, Kamali gave up a reversal but got out to get the escape point. After going down to start the third period, he quickly escaped and then scored a late takedown to secure the points needed for the major decision victory. Kamali's win helped Olivet defeat the Bulldogs, 24-15 and clinch the outright MIAA title.
Kamali entered the match as the No. 10 125-pounder in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) individual rankings, while Rosas was No. 15. They were also No. 3 and No. 4 respectively in the NWCA Region 5 poll.
With the win, Kamali improves his season record to 24-1. Twenty of the wins – eight pins, seven technical falls and five major decisions – scored bonus points. Kamali's only loss was an 11-9 setback to Trevor Hisey from Indiana Tech in the championship match at the Trine (Ind.) Invitational.
Olivet returns to the mats on Friday and Saturday, February 28-March 1, at the 2025 NCAA Division III Region 5 Championships. Wabash (Ind.) College is the host school.
