Baseball Team Defeats Tri-State (Ind.) University, 10-4
The Olivet College baseball team banged out 16 base hits en route to a 10-4 victory today against Tri-State University.
ANGOLA, Ind. -- The Olivet College baseball team banged out 16 base hits en route to a 10-4 victory today against Tri-State University.
The Fighting Comets scored four runs in the top of the first inning before Tri-State answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Olivet tallied one run in both the second and fifth inning. The Comets then put the game out of reach with four more runs in the sixth inning.
Leading the offensive attack for Olivet (6-11 overall) were senior designated hitter Thomas Stowe (Middlefield, Ohio/ Cardinal High School) and sophomore right fielder Matthew Hurley (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/White Plains) with three hits apiece. Stowe drove in a run and scored a run for the Comets. Hurley scored two runs and stole two bases. Senior shortstop Steve Held (Brampton, Ontario/Saint Augustine) was two-for-three with a home run, two runs scored and three runs batted-in.
Junior centerfielder Beau Locker (Coldwater/Union City High School) also hit a two-run home run and junior second baseman Joe Richards (Galesburg Augusta High School) added two base hits and two RBI. Senior catcher James Neeley (Ontario, Canada) had two base hits.
On the mound, junior William Lawrence (Hamilton, Canada/ Bishop Ryan) earned the win after pitching six innings. He allowed eight base hits and four earned runs. Senior Jacob Marlow (Delton Kellogg High School), junior D.J. Celetti (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/Notre Dame) and freshman Ryan Merchant (South Lyon High School) all pitched an inning of relief and did not allow a base hit.
The Comets will next play on Tuesday, April 8, when they host Concordia University in a non-league single game at 4 p.m.
