Baseball Team Defeats Calvin College, 8-5
The Olivet College baseball team defeated Calvin College, 8-5, today in the opener of a three-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series. The Comets and Knights will take the field for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- The Olivet College baseball team defeated Calvin College, 8-5, today in the opener of a three-game Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association series. The Comets and Knights will take the field for a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
After Calvin took an early 2-0 lead, Olivet (11-12, 3-4 MIAA) scored four runs in the fourth inning. The Knights battled back and tied the score at 4-4 before the Comets tallied two runs in both the seventh and ninth inning.
Freshman designated hitter Jason Rooley (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/Korah) led the Comet hitting attack with two base hits, including a two-run single in the ninth inning. He also scored a run and had a sacrifice bunt.
Seniors Steve Held (Brampton, Ontario/Saint Augustine) and James Virden (Branch/Mason County Central High School) and sophomore Matthew Hurley (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/White Plains) also had two hits a piece. Junior Joe Richards (Galesburg Augusta High School) scored two runs for the Comets.
On the mound, junior Josh Kellogg (Morley Stanwood High School) picked-up the victory after pitching the first six and two-thirds innings, allowing five base hits and three earned runs. He struck out six batters. Junior D.J. Celetti (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/Notre Dame) earned the save by tossing the final two and one-thirds innings. He gave up two base hits and struck out three.
Following the doubleheader tomorrow, Olivet will next be in action on Tuesday, April 22, when it hosts Defiance (Ohio) College in a non-conference single game at 4 p.m. Next Friday-Saturday, the Comets will travel to play Kalamazoo College in a MIAA series. Friday's single game will start at 4 p.m., and the doubleheader will start on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
