Baseball Team Sweeps Doubleheader at Kalamazoo, 12-6 and 14-3
The Olivet College baseball team swept a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Kalamazoo College today, 12-6 and 14-3. The Fighting Comets (17-12, 8-4 MIAA) extended their winning streak to 11 games, including eight in the MIAA.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The Olivet College baseball team swept a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association doubleheader at Kalamazoo College today, 12-6 and 14-3. The Fighting Comets (17-12, 8-4 MIAA) extended their winning streak to 11 games, including eight in the MIAA.
In the first game, Olivet opened the scoring with nine unearned runs in the top of the first inning. All nine runs were scored after two outs had been recorded. The Comets added two runs (one earned) in the sixth inning and another unearned run in the seventh.
At the plate, junior centerfielder Beau Locker (Coldwater/ Union City High School) was two-for-three with two doubles, a run scored and a run batted-in. Junior James Virden (Branch/Mason County Central High School) and freshman Jason Rooley (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/Korah) each had two hits and scored a run. Virden hit a two-run homer in the first inning and junior Richard Strain (Livonia Churchill High School) had a two-run triple in the first.
On the mound, senior Jacob Marlow (Delton Kellogg High School) pitched a complete game six-hitter. He allowed three earned runs and struck out five batters.
In the nightcap, the Comets led 5-0 after four innings. The Hornets cut the deficit to two runs in the fifth. Olivet then "iced" the game with four runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh. Locker, Virden and freshman Stan Cieslak (Troy Avondale High School) all had two hits. Locker scored three runs and drove in three runs. Virden and sophomore Matthew Hurley (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/White Plains) also had three RBI a piece.
Senior Thomas Stowe (Middlefield, Ohio/Cardinal High School) picked-up his first win this season as he tossed the first four and two-thirds innings. He gave up six base hits and one earned run. Junior D.J. Celetti (Sault Ste. Marie, Canada/Notre Dame) pitched two and one-thirds innings of hitless relief work.
The Comets will travel to play St. Mary's College tomorrow, April 27 at 1 p.m. On Tuesday, April 29, Olivet plays a doubleheader at non-conference foe Manchester (Ind.) College at 2 p.m.
