Baseball team swept by Albion College, 4-2 and 5-0
The Olivet College baseball team was swept by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College, 4-2 and 5-0, this afternoon in Olivet.
The Olivet College baseball team was swept by Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College, 4-2 and 5-0, this afternoon in Olivet. With the three-game series sweep, Albion moves into sole possession of first-place in the MIAA standings with a 23-14 overall and 12-3 MIAA record. Olivet slips into a tie for third-place with a 16-19 overall and 8-7 MIAA mark.
In the first game, Olivet (16-19) scored a run in the first inning when freshman Chris Shelhart (Rolling Meadows, Ill./St. Viator) hit a single to drive in senior Joe Richards (Galesburg Augusta High School), who led off the inning with a single down the right field line. The Comets added another run in the third inning on a RBI double to leftfield by Shelhart. The Britons earned the victory with single runs in each of the last four innings.
For the game, Shelhart was three-for-four with a double and two RBIs. Senior Ricky Strain (Livonia Churchill High School) reached base in his four plate appearances, once on a single and three times on a walk. On the mound, senior Josh Kellogg (Morley Stanwood High School) was tagged with the loss. He pitched seven innings, scattering 10 hits while striking out four.
In the nightcap, Albion hit a home run in the first inning. The Britons tacked on four more runs in the third inning to chase Olivet starter Zach Langford (Marshall High School) out of the game. The Comets had just three hits in the game with junior Ben Thomas (Kalamazoo Comstock) collecting the only extra base hit, a double.
Langford pitched two and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits and five earned runs. The Comet bullpen shut the Britons down for the remainder of the game and gave up one base hit.
Olivet will next play on Friday and Saturday, May 7-8, when it wraps-up up the 2004 regular season with a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association weekend series at Hope College. On Friday, the teams will play a nine-inning game at 4 p.m., followed by a doubleheader on Saturday at 1 p.m.
