Baseball team has 1-1 record against Notre Dame (Ohio)
The Olivet College baseball team had a 1-1 record against Notre Dame College of Ohio today in its third day of competition at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The Comets lost the first game, 10-6. In the nightcap, freshman Brian Rogers (Coloma) pitched a complete game as Olivet beat the Falcons, 7-2.

The Olivet College baseball team had a 1-1 record against Notre Dame College of Ohio today in its third day of competition at the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida. The Comets lost the first game, 10-6. In the nightcap, freshman Brian Rogers (Coloma) pitched a complete game as Olivet beat the Falcons, 7-2.
After Notre Dame took a 2-0 lead in the third inning, the Comets (2-4) sent 10 batters to the plate and scored five runs in the fourth inning. Five different players recorded a RBI in the frame. The Falcons grabbed a 10-5 lead with a seven-run seventh inning. Olivet added a run in the bottom of seventh.
For the game, junior Chris Shelhart (Rolling Meadows, Ill./St. Viator) collected three hits, including two doubles. He also scored a team-high two runs. Five other hitters each tallied a base hit. Extra base hits were doubles by seniors Stan Cieslak (Troy/Avondale) and Jonathon Van Son (Macomb/H.W. Notre Dame) and junior Brandon Wilkins (Detroit/Orchard Lake St. Mary's).
Junior Brian Schaeffer (Mason) started on the mound and pitched six innings. He allowed five hits and three runs. Junior Elliot Wilcox (Mattawan) faced three batters in the seventh and was tagged with the loss.
In the nightcap, the Comets jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Cieslak doubled down the leftfield line, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a wild pitch. Notre Dame answered with two runs in its half of the first.
Olivet went ahead for good with four runs in the third inning. Six straight singles resulted in the four runs. The Comets added two insurance runs in the seventh.
At the plate, Cieslak was three-for-four with a double and two singles. He also scored twice. Junior Isaiah Wiltshire (Mississauga, Ontario/Lorne Park) was used as a courtesy runner and scored two runs. Van Son contributed two RBIs. Rogers allowed seven hits, while striking out 11 batters and walking four.
Olivet is back in action tomorrow against Muskingum (Ohio) College. The nine-inning game will start at 7 p.m.
