Baseball team loses twice to Alma, 10-0 and 9-5

The Olivet College baseball team lost two games to Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Alma College, 10-0 and 5-1, today at Klenk Park in Alma. They will complete the four-game series Saturday with a doubleheader in Olivet at 1 p.m.
In the first game, five Comet errors led to seven unearned runs. The Scots (9-14, 6-8 MIAA) tallied three runs in first, second and fourth innings. They closed out the scoring with a run in the fifth.
Five Olivet (7-16, 4-10 MIAA) players had a base hit. On the mound, junior Brian Schaeffer (Mason) was charged with the loss. He pitched the first one and one-third innings, giving up five hits and six runs (two earned). In relief, sophomore Ed O'Brien (Stockbridge) and junior Elliot Wilcox (Mattawan) each tossed two and one-third innings. O'Brien allowed four hits and three unearned runs. Wilcox surrendered three hits.
In the second game, Alma tallied two unearned runs in each of the first two innings. The Comets scored their run in the second inning. Freshman Brian St. Hilaire (Grosse Pointe/North) singled, moved to second on a walk to junior Chris Shelhart (Rolling Meadows, Ill./St. Viator) and scored on a single by junior Nate Rann (Laingsburg).
At the plate, Olivet collected five hits. The lone extra base hit was a double by senior Drew Benoit (Climax-Scotts). On the mound, freshman Mark Sherrod (Jackson) suffered the loss. He went the distance (six innings), allowing five hits.
Following Saturday's doubleheader, the Comets' next MIAA series is against Calvin College. Olivet will host the Knights Friday, April 21, and will travel to Grand Rapids on Saturday, April 22.
