Baseball team splits home doubleheader against Calvin
The Olivet College baseball team split a home doubleheader against Calvin College this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet. After losing the first game, 6-3, the Comets salvaged the split with a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.
In the opener, the Knights pushed across four runs in the top half of the first inning. Olivet got one back in the bottom half of the second. Senior Brad Sullens (Belleville) drove in junior Beau Felix (Hartland), who had reached base on a Calvin error to start the inning. The Knights added to their lead with single runs in the fifth and sixth innings. The Comets scored twice in the home half of the sixth on Sullens' sacrifice fly and freshman Randy Young's (Wixom/Walled Lake Western) RBI-single.
Offensively, Olivet collected seven hits. Sullens went 2-for-2 with two RBI. Junior Braydon LaFramboise (Flushing/Mt. Morris) also had two hits, while Felix scored two runs. On the mound, junior Brad Beisiegel (Royal Oak) suffered the loss, as went all seven innings and allowed six runs (five earned) on eight hits.
In the nightcap, the Comets got on the scoreboard first with a run in the first inning. With two outs, senior Erik McCloud (Holly) hit a single, moved to second on a passed ball and scored on sophomore Austin Clark's (Ossineke/Alpena) double down the left field line. Calvin tied the game at 1-1 with a run in the fourth.
Olivet scored three times in the fifth inning. Freshman Devon Doxey (Climax/Climax-Scotts) drew a walk and advanced to third when the Calvin shortstop had the ball go under his glove and into centerfield off a batted ball by LaFramboise. Junior Ben Kosmalski (Canton/Plymouth) followed with a sharply hit infield single, scoring Doxey and moving LaFramboise to second. McCloud then sent the first pitch into deep over the centerfielder's head for a two-run double.
In the top half of the sixth, the Knights used a two-out, two-run pinch-hit single to make the score 4-3. After the runner got into scoring position with a stolen base, the next batter struck out swinging to end the inning. The Comets had the first batters reach base in the sixth but an out at third and double play ended their threat.
A southpaw, LaFramboise started the seventh inning on the mound to face the left-handed Calvin batters. He did his job, getting two strikeouts before an error put the tying run on base. McCloud took over on the mound and on his first pitch, the batter hit a comebacker to him. He threw over to first for the out and to preserve the 4-3 win.
For the second straight game, Olivet had seven base hits. McCloud was 2-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Five others each had a hit. Extra base hits were doubles by Clark, McCloud and sophomore Jacob Blamer (Newaygo). Freshman Jay Magro (Bridgman) pitched the first six innings to pick up the win. He gave up the three runs on nine hits, while striking out three and not walking a batter. McCloud earned his third save of the season.
