UOlivet rallies to beat Trine, 9-8

ANGOLA, Ind. – The University of Olivet baseball team scored three runs in the ninth inning to post a 9-8 win over Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Trine (Ind.) University today at Jannen Field.

GAME HIGHLIGHTS
- The Comets took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI-single by senior Mason Cook. The Thunder answered with a run in their half of the first. Olivet grabbed the lead back in the second inning on sophomore Jack Friesen's RBI-single.
- Trine took a 7-2 lead with three runs in both the third and fourth innings. Junior Tyler Duncan hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to make the score 7-4. Alflen and Friesen each drove in a run in the eighth inning to close the gap to two runs at 7-6. The Thunder added a run in the last half of the eighth to go up, 8-6.
- Senior Brendan Monroe led off the ninth with a double to the right-center field gap. Junior Kaleb Spahr entered the game as a pinch runner. Junior Nate Droste walked to put two runners on base. Sophomore EJ Suggitt hit a pinch-hit single to score Spahr and advanced Droste to second. Senior Ben Helgevold ran for Suggitt. Junior Brody Parten was hit by a pitch to load the bases. After the first out was recorded, Alflen roped a single to plate Droste with the tying run and Helgevold with the go-ahead run.
- In the bottom of the ninth, Trine was retired 1-2-3 with two ground outs sandwiched around a strikeout.
FOR THE COMETS
- At the plate, Olivet recorded 12 hits. Alflen, Droste, Friesen and Monroe each had two hits. Alflen collected three RBI, while Duncan and Friesen finished with two RBI apiece.
- On the mound, Droste threw the first seven innings and gave up seven runs (three earned) on 11 hits. Freshman Teegan Glennon pitched the eighth inning to pick-up the win. Sophomore Logan Lewis tossed the ninth to earn the save.
UP NEXT
- The Comets and Thunder end the series and their seasons on Sunday with a doubleheader at the Cutler Athletic Complex in Olivet, with first pitch from game one slated for 1 p.m.
