UOlivet falls to Trine, 4-1, on Senior Day

OLIVET, Mich. – The University of Olivet baseball team was defeated by Trine (Ind.) University, 4-1, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) contest today at the Cutler Athletic Complex. The Comets were leading game two of the doubleheader, but heavy rain stopped the game before being ruled a no contest by the coaches and umpires.

GAME 1 HIGHLIGHTS
- The Comets scored their run in the third inning. Sophomore Jack Friesen led off with a double down the left field line. Sophomore EJ Suggitt then lined the first pitch he saw into center field to score Friesen.
- The Thunder took a 3-1 lead on a three-run homer in the sixth inning. In the seventh, Olivet had runners on second and third with only one out before back-to-back flyouts ended the inning.
- Trine loaded the bases in the eighth inning. The Comets got out of the jam with an out at the plate and strikeout. The first two batters reached base safely for Olivet in the bottom of the inning. A lineout and double play ended the inning.
- A solo home run in the ninth put the Thunder ahead 4-1. The Comets were then sent down 1-2-3 to finish the game.
FOR THE COMETS
- Olivet totaled seven hits, including doubles by Friesen and senior Mason Cook. Junior Mikey Kuzara was 2-for-3 with two singles. Junior Tyler Duncan stole two bases.
- On the mound, junior Bryan Carney suffered the loss despite giving up the three runs on six hits over eight innings. He struck out 10 batters to move into third all-time in UOlivet history with 166.
SENIOR DAY
- Between games, the Comets honored their eight seniors – Cook, Ben Helgevold, Trever Klotz, Wyatt Leland, Brendan Monroe, Niko Ponos, Tyler Rupp and Ethan VanLannen – who were in uniform for their final collegiate baseball game. Cook, Helgevold, Klotz, Leland, Ponos and VanLannen were part of the UOlivet baseball program for all four years. Monroe and Rupp played two years at Olivet after transferring from Glen Oaks Community College.
