Football team falls to Hope, 31-16

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College football team fell to Hope College, 31-16, in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) contest this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex.

- The Flying Dutchmen capitalized on an Olivet turnover to score its first touchdown. Kenyea Houston capped a 7-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run at the 7:52 mark of the opening quarter.
- The Comets responded on their ensuing drive. On the 13th play of the drive, senior Nyassinu Crowell, Jr. rushed 14 yards into the end zone. Junior Samuel Roose's PAT kick split the uprights.
- In a drive spanning the end of the first quarter and start of the second quarter, Hope went ahead 14-7 on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Chase Brown to Terrell Harris.
- Olivet closed the gap to 14-10 when Roose nailed a 26-yard field goal with 4:20 left before halftime.
- On a fourth and 14 play, the Flying Dutchmen stretched their lead to 21-10 when Brown completed a 33-yard touchdown pass to TJ Mckenzie.
- In the final minute of the end of the second quarter, Roose booted a 26-yard field goal to make the score 21-13 at the break.
- Both teams were forced to punt on their first possession of the second half.
- Hope surged ahead 28-13 on a 79-yard touchdown pass from Brown to Mckenzie.
- The Flying Dutchmen went ahead 31-13 with six minutes left on a 29-yard field goal by Dylan Hillger.
- The Comets closed their scoring when Roose kicked his third field goal of the game, this one from 29 yards out.
- Olivet totaled 378 yards of offense – 259 on the ground and 119 through the air.
- Crowell had 15 carries for 104 yards.
- Sophomores Cortaveon Barnett and Jeremiah Sterling finished with 68 and 64 rushing yards, respectively.
- Freshman Evan Ormsby completed 10-of-24 passes for 98 yards.
- Junior Jalen Broussard caught five passes for 67 yards.
- Defensively, senior John Thompson had a team-leading 10 tackles and two pass break-ups.
- Senior Andrew Campbell recorded eight tackles.
- Roose's three field goals tied Olivet's single-game record. Justin Hunwick made three field goals against Defiance on September 6, 2003, and Alma College on October 2, 2004, and Doug Pollard made three against Adrian College on October 6, 2018.
- Hope recorded 409 yards – 175 rushing and 234 passing.
- Brown completed 16-of-24 passes for 234 yards.
- Mckenzie hauled in five passes for 136 yards.
- Ian Rampersad snagged four passes for 62 yards.
- Houston was leading rusher with 10 carries for 54 yards.
- Brady Howe topped the defense with 11 tackles.
- Olivet travels to play Albion College next Saturday, October 23. Kick-off at Sprankle-Sprandel Stadium is 1 p.m.
