OLIVET, Mich. – Junior Dontal Wright scored a fourth-quarter touchdown to help The University of Olivet football team rally past College of Wooster (Ohio), 27-23, this afternoon at the Cutler Athletic Complex.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Olivet 27, Wooster 23
- Location: Cutler Athletic Complex; Olivet, Michigan
- Records: Olivet 1-1 overall, Wooster 1-1 overall
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wooster scored on its first possession when Shakir Perkins found the end zone from a yard out. The two-point conversion attempt was good to make the score 8-0 with 6:53 left in the opening quarter.
- The Comets trimmed their deficit to one point after freshman Tronice Hammond rumbled 19 yards for a touchdown and senior Tristan McElhinney's PAT kick.
- Olivet's defense forced a three-and-out on the Scots' next drive. A bad snap handed the ball back to the Comets at the Wooster 18. Hammond rushed 18 yards for the go-ahead score. The PAT kick was missed to make the score 13-8 at the 12:06 mark of the second quarter.
- The defense stopped the Scots on fourth down deep in Olivet territory. The Comets marched down the field and on the seventh play, Hammond scored from three yards out. The PAT kick was good, and Olivet led 20-8 with 5:03 left before halftime.
- Wooster answered with an 11-play drive, capped off by a nine-yard touchdown pass from Chanden Lee to Carter Warstler. Following the PAT kick, the Scots trailed 20-15 with just over a minute remaining in the first half.
- The score stayed 20-15 at the halftime break.
- A 13-yard touchdown run for Lee gave the lead to the Scots, 23-20, at the 10:09 mark of the third quarter.
- Neither team scored any more points in the third period.
- In the fourth quarter, Wooster elected to go for a first down on a fourth and one play from the Olivet 14. The Comet defense stopped Lee just short of the line to gain.
- The Comets were only able to gain five yards on their ensuing drive. The Olivet punt deflected off a Wooster player near midfield and junior Lemonte Davis recovered the loose ball.
- Wright ended the nine-play, 51-yard Olivet drive with an 11-yard touchdown run. McElhinney's PAT kick split the uprights.
- Once again, the Comet defense held the Scots to zero yards and forced a punt.
- The punt was downed at the Olivet 30 and the scoreboard clock read 4:19. The Comet offense got into Wooster territory courtesy of a pass interference penalty. Three rushes resulted in a fourth and four play. After a timeout, junior quarterback Thomas Foust used his legs to gain 20 yards and seal Olivet's win.
