Men’s basketball team opens season with an 89-49 win over Andrews University
The Olivet College men’s basketball team opened its 2005-06 season today with an 89-49 victory over Andrews University in a first round game of the Gary Morrison Tip-Off Tournament in Olivet.
The Olivet College men's basketball team opened its 2005-06 season today with an 89-49 victory over Andrews University in a first round game of the Gary Morrison Tip-Off Tournament in Olivet. In the other game, Spring Arbor University defeated Marygrove College, 86-62.
The consolation game between Andrews and Marygrove will start tomorrow at 6:30 p.m., followed by the championship game at approximately 8:30 p.m.
With 8:05 left before halftime, a three-pointer by senior Derek Kurtz (Hillsdale/ Jonesville) made the score 31-20. The Comets' lead would stay in double digits for the remainder of the game. Olivet led by as many as 16 points on three occasions in the first half, and the 40-point margin of victory was the biggest lead of the second half.
For the game, the Comets shot 50.7 percent (36-of-71) from the floor and out-rebounded the Cardinals, 58-29. Senior Gerald Dozie (Detroit/Southeastern) posted a double-double, 15 points and 12 rebounds, to lead Olivet. He was joined in double figures by senior De'Andre Pruitt (River Rouge) with a team-high 17 points. Robert Banks (Detroit/Benedictine) and Tiomkin Marsh (Flint/Central) grabbed seven rebounds apiece.
Sean Andrews topped Andrews with 19 points. David McGill came off the bench to record a team-high five rebounds.
Following tomorrow's game, the Comets will travel to play Saginaw Valley State University at 8 p.m.
