The Olivet College men’s basketball team fell to Defiance (Ohio) College, 61-55, this afternoon in a non-conference contest at the Karl H. Weaner Center in Defiance.
The Olivet College men's basketball team fell to Defiance (Ohio) College, 61-55, this afternoon in a non-conference contest at the Karl H. Weaner Center in Defiance.
The Yellow Jackets (6-2) jumped out to an 11-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game. The Comets (1-5) battled back 18-5 run to take their largest lead of the first half, 22-16, at the 8:05 mark. Defiance outscored Olivet, 20-2, in the final 8:05 of the half to take a 36-24 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Yellow Jackets led by 16 points, 57-41, with 5:28 left. The Comets cut their deficit down to six points on three occasions, including the final margin of defeat.
For the game, juniors Brandon Way (Detroit/Southwestern) and Jeff Cooper (Dowagiac) led Olivet with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Way, sophomore Eric McCoy (Charlotte) and freshman Andy Sierminski (Jackson/Lumen Christi) each grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
Anthony Pettway posted a double-double, 20 points and 10 rebounds, for Defiance. Mike Floyd had 13 points.
Olivet is back in action Tuesday and Wednesday, Dec. 19-20, when it participates in the D3 Desert Shootout in Las Vegas. The Comets open play Tuesday against Carthage (Wisc.) College at 1:15 p.m. PST. The consolation and championship games are Wednesday at 11 a.m. and 1:15 p.m., respectively.
