Men's basketball team loses to No. 1 Hope, 75-60

OLIVET, Mich. – The Olivet College men's basketball team battled Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) leader Hope College for the first half, but in the end Hope beat the Comets, 75-60, tonight at The Cutler Event Center in Olivet. The Flying Dutchmen entered the game ranked No. 1 in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.
Hope led by as many as eight points, 14-6, in the first half. Olivet came back with 9-0 scoring spurt to take a 15-14 led at the 11:47 mark. The Dutchmen answered with a 3-pointer to go back up 17-15. The Comets came right back with a 9-2 to take their largest lead of the half, 24-19, with 7:38 left before the break.
Olivet held the lead for the next two and one-half minutes until Hope put together a 6-0 run to take the lead back and eventually lead by five points, 33-28. The Comets made the score 34-32 before Peter Bunn made two foul shots for a 36-32 Dutchmen lead at halftime.
In the second half, Olivet cut its deficit down to three points, 38-35. From there, Hope scored the next eight points to take either team's first double digit lead, 46-35. The Comets would not get any closer for the rest of the game.
Freshmen Dylan Roe (Traverse City/Central) and Paul Lombard (New Era/Montague) both came off the bench and finished with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Junior Alvino Ashley (Detroit/MLK) was one point shy of a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds. Senior Jaren Edsall (Whitehall) also scored nine points, including one 3-pointer that moved him into a tie for fifth-place all-time at Olivet with 117.
Four Hope starters scored in double figures, led by David Krombeen's game-high 16. Nate Snuggerud and Nate VanArendonk had 13 apiece. Peter Bunn scored 11 points and also grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Comets will close out the 2011-12 season Saturday when they host Calvin College at 3 p.m. Before the game, Olivet will recognize its three seniors, who are playing in their final game. In addition, at halftime, there will be a ceremony to honor the 1972 and 1973 MIAA Championship teams.
