Men’s basketball team beaten by Purdue-Calumet, 86-63
The Olivet College men’s basketball team was down only five points at halftime before Purdue University-Calumet outscored the Comets, 47-29, in the second half to beat them, 86-63, today at the Fitness & Recreation Center in Hammond, Indiana.
HAMMOND, Ind. – The Olivet College men's basketball team was down only five points at halftime before Purdue University-Calumet outscored the Comets, 47-29, in the second half to beat them, 86-63, today at the Fitness & Recreation Center in Hammond, Indiana.
The Comets (0-4) led by as many as nine points, 20-11, at the 13:36 of the first half when freshman Kevin Woodson (Lambertville/Monroe St. Mary Catholic) made a three-pointer. The Peregrines (6-1) chipped away at their deficit and took their first lead since early in the game at 25-24 with 5:04 left before halftime.
Both teams made a three-pointer and two-point basket to keep the score at a one-point difference, 30-29. After two ties at 30-30 and 34-34, Purdue-Calumet scored the final five points of the opening half to lead 39-34 at the break. Overall, the first half featured four tied scores and eight lead changes.
The Peregrines opened the second half with a 12-2 scoring run in the first five minutes to take their largest lead, 51-36. Olivet scored two points to make the score 51-40. Purdue-Calumet put the game out of reach with a 14-0 spurt to gain their largest lead of the game, 64-40. The closest the Comets would get for the remainder of the game was 18 points, 69-51, after Woodson drained a free throw to complete a four-point play.
Olivet shot 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the floor to 59.2 percent (29-of-49) for the Peregrines. Junior Blake Krum (Schoolcraft) led the Comets with 13 points. Woodson and junior Jordan Union (Jackson) added 11 and 10 points, respectively. Union also dished out five assists. Sophomore T.J. Vondette (Hemlock) led the team with five rebounds.
Kaspars Brencans was one of four Purdue-Calumet players in double figures, as he led all players with 21 points. Brandon Bradford contributed 11 points, while Daniel McGee and Drew Ridlen each contributed 10. Danny Paschen came off the bench to grab a game-high eight rebounds.
The Comets host Baldwin Wallace (Ohio) University in their home-opener next Tuesday, Nov. 26. Tip-off from The Cutler Event Center is 6 p.m. The game is a part of basketball doubleheader, as the Olivet women will host Hope College after the men's game.
