Olivet College’s Johnson named MIAA Athlete of the Week for men’s basketball
HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Olivet College senior Derrick Johnson has been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week for men’s basketball.
HUDSONVILLE, Mich. – Olivet College senior Derrick Johnson has been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Athlete of the Week for men's basketball.
Johnson averaged 19.5 points and five rebounds to lead Comets to a 1-1 record at the Washington University / Lopata Classic in St. Louis, Missouri. In the first game, a 76-73 loss to Pomona-Pitzer College, he had 21 points, with seven three-pointers. In the consolation game, a 75-71 win over Eureka (Ill.) College, Johnson scored 18 points. For the two games, he drained 13-of-25 (52 percent) total baskets, including 12-of-21 from behind the arc. For his performance, Johnson was named to the all-tournament team.
"Derrick played tough and with confidence this weekend," said Olivet head coach Sam Hargraves. "We were more excited about his defense effort than we were about his shooting."
Johnson and the Comets (2-3) return to the court Saturday against University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Tip-off from Kachel Gymnasium in Whitewater, Wisconsin, is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT/2 p.m. ET.
