Men's swim and dive team beats Alma, loses to Hope
The Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team competed in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association double dual meet at Hope College. The Fighting Comets defeated Alma College, 86-26, but fell to the Flying Dutchmen, 62-51.
The Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team competed in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association double dual meet at Hope College. The Fighting Comets defeated Alma College, 86-26, but fell to the Flying Dutchmen, 62-51.
Leading the way for the Comets were freshmen Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico) and Levi Yockey (Phoenix, Ariz./North High School), who each broke two individual school records and swam on a record-setting relay.
Yockey broke his own school record in the 200 freestyle (1:48.99) and 500 free (4:56.57). He then teamed with Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland High School), Matt Powers (Kalamazoo Central High School) and Paul Riha (East Grand Rapids High School) to break the school mark in the 400 free relay (3:23.57).
Aguirre set school records in the 50 free (22.33) and 100 free (49.32). Fetters, Powers and Ben Guins (Lansing Eastern High School) joined Aguirre to break the school mark in the 400 medley relay (3:48.09).
In addition, three individual school records were broken: Fetters in the 200 butterfly (2:09.19), Jon Cox (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School) in the 200 breaststroke (2:21.75) and Brad Waddell (Holland/West Ottawa High School) in the 200 backstroke (2:08.03).
Olivet also had three first-place finishes: Waddell in the 1000 free (10:40.40), Steve Dastoli (Kalamazoo Central High School) in the one-meter dive (210.50) and Andy Weiss (Fremont High School) in the three-meter dive (226.90). Cox placed second overall in the 200 individual medley (2:07.45).
The Comets are next in action on Friday, Jan. 16 when they travel to compete against Kalamazoo College at 6 p.m.
