Despite breaking five school records, the men’s swimming and diving team dropped a 126.5-109.5 decision today at University of Chicago.
Individually, the Fighting Comets were first in five events and set school records in three. Freshman Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) shattered his own school record in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 10:09.29. The previous record was 10:16.31. Freshman Koji Takahashi (Etobicoke, Ontario/Silver Thorn CI) re-set his school record by .28 seconds in the 100 butterfly (53.48). Freshman Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason) broke the school record by .10 seconds in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.47).
The 200 medley relay team of Meisner, Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland), Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo Central) and Paul Riha (East Grand Rapids) was second in a school-record time of 1:40.80. Powers, Riha, Takahashi and Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico) teamed together for a school-record time of 1:29.40 in the 200 freestyle relay.
Other first-place finishers were junior Steve Dastoli (Kalamazoo Central) in the one-meter diving competition (209.50) and sophomore Andy Weiss (Fremont) on the three-meter diving competition (191.00). Dastoli was second on the three-meter board, and Weiss was second on the one-meter board.
Aguirre also finished second in two events – 50 freestyle (22,68) and 100 freestyle (49.36). Jaffee was second in the 500 freestyle (4:54.19). Powers placed second in the 100 backstroke (57.67). Sophomore Brad Waddell (Holland/West Ottawa) was runner-up in the 1000 freestyle (10:39.55).
Olivet is next in action Saturday, Jan. 15, when it hosts Albion College in a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual meet at 1 p.m.
