Men's swimming and diving team defeats Alma, 154-58
The men’s swimming and diving team was first in 12-of-13 events and defeated Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Alma College, 154-58, this evening at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet.
The men’s swimming and diving team was first in 12-of-13 events and defeated Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Alma College, 154-58, this evening at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet. Olivet elected to treat the final event, 400 freestyle relay, as an exhibition swim.
Individually, junior Steve Dastoli (Kalamazoo/Central), sophomore Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland) and freshman Koji Takahashi (Etobicoke, Ontario/Silver Thorn CI) led the way for the Fighting Comets with two first-place finishes each. Dastoli was first in the one-meter dive (220.20) and three-meter dive (223.30). Fetters finished first in the 50 freestyle (22.81) and 100 freestyle (50.45). Takahashi claimed first in the 200 individual medley (2:05.21) and broke the school record by .07 seconds in the 200 backstroke (2:03.34).
The other first-place finishes were by sophomore Nick Borowicz (Lennon/Corunna) in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.09), freshman Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio) in the 200 freestyle (1:51.82), freshman Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason) in the 200 butterfly (2:05.90), sophomore Brad Waddell (Holland/West Ottawa) in the 500 freestyle (5:02.37) and freshman Jason Wheatley (Portage/Central) in the 1,000 freestyle (10:26.21).
The 400 medley relay team of sophomores Ben Guins (Lansing/Eastern), Paul Riha (East Grand Rapids) and Levi Yockey (Phoenix, Ariz./North) and freshman Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo Central) touched the wall first in 3:51.10.
Olivet also claimed six runner-up finishes – sophomore Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico) in the 200 freestyle (1:52.38), Meisner in the 50 freestyle (:23.27), sophomore Andy Weiss (Fremont) in the one- and three-meter dives (203.20 and 212.35), Wheatley in the 500 freestyle (5:02.84) and Yockey in the 200 butterfly (2:13.05).
The Comets will next compete tomorrow at Kalamazoo College at 1 p.m.
