The men’s swimming and diving team stands in fourth place after the first day of the 2005 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships hosted by Hope College at the Holland Community Aquatic Center.
The men’s swimming and diving team stands in fourth place after the first day of the 2005 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Championships hosted by Hope College at the Holland Community Aquatic Center. The Fighting Comets have 104 team points. The top three teams are Hope (166.5), Kalamazoo (116.50) and Albion (110).
The top finisher was freshman Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio), who was third in the 500 freestyle (4:41.49). After breaking the school record during the morning prelims, he shaved another 3.28 seconds off the record during the finals.
In the 200 individual medley, freshman Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason) continued the record-breaking for the Comets. He was ninth and set a school record (2:02.05).
In the one-meter dive, sophomore Andy Weiss (Fremont) scored 373.75 points for a third-place finish. Junior Steve Dastoli (Kalamazoo/Central) was close behind with 364.40 points to finish in fourth-place
Both the 200 free and 400 medley relays broke the school record. Juan Aquirre (Queretaro, Mexico), Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland), Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo/Central) and Paul Riha (East Grand Rapids) was fourth in the 200 free relay (1:27.33). The 400 medley relay team of Aguirre, Fetters, Meisner and Koji Takahashi (Etbicoke, Ontario/Silver Thorn CI) was third (3:32.78).
Action resumes tomorrow morning with preliminaries in seven events, beginning at 10 a.m. Finals in those events will start at 6 p.m.
