Men’s swimming and diving team falls to defending MIAA champ Hope College, 133-101
The Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team kicked off the 2004-05 season today and fell to defending Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) champion Hope College, 133-101.

The Fighting Comets recorded 13 finishes in first- or second-place, including four individual winners. Sophomore Andy Weiss (Fremont High School) was first in the one- and three-meter diving events with scores of 202.80 and 212.85, respectively. Junior Steve Dastoli (Kalamazoo Central High School) had a score of 199.75 to place second on the one-meter board.
Freshman Koji Takahashi (Etibicoke, Ontario) broke the school record with a first-place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:03.46), followed by sophomore Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland High School) with a time of 2:07.48.
Freshman Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason High School) led a 1-2-3 finish for Olivet in the 200 breaststroke with a time 2:14.68. Sophomores Jon Cox (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School) and Ben Guins (Lansing Eastern High School) were second and third, respectively.
In the 1,000 freestyle, freshman Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green High School) was second and set a school record with a time of 10:16.31. He also finished second in the 500 freestyle (4:55.33). Takahashi was second in the 200 freestyle (1:52.79).
The 50 free was close for second and third as freshman Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo Central High School) edged sophomore Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico) at the wall by .14 seconds. Powers’ time was 22.86 seconds.
The 400 medley and 400 free relays finished in second. Fetters and Meisner were joined by sophomores John Johnson (Grand Blanc High School) and Matt Powers (Kalamazoo Central High School) in the medley relay for a time of 3:45.92. Aguirre, Jaffee, Mitch Powers and Takahashi swam the 400 free relay in 3:19.81.
Olivet continues MIAA action Friday, Nov. 5, when it hosts Calvin College in the Upton Center Pool at 6 p.m.
