Men's swimming and diving team defeats Calvin, 142-89
The Olivet College men’s swimming and diving team defeated Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) foe Calvin College, 142-89, this evening at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet. The victory marks the first time in school history that the Fighting Comets have beaten the Knights.

In the meet, Olivet captured first-place in nine-of-13 events. In addition, the Comets finished 1-2-3 in two events.
The night started off on a positive note as the 200 medley relay team of Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico), Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland High School), Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason High School) and Paul Riha (East Grand Rapids High School) edged Calvin at the wall by .04 seconds with a time of 1:40.87.
In the next event, the 1,000 freestyle, Brad Waddell (Holland/West Ottawa High School), John Johnson (Grand Blanc High School) and Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green High School) finished 1-2-3. Waddell’s winning time was 10:26.34.
Koji Takahashi (Etobicoke, Ontario/Silver Thorn CI) followed with a first-place finish in the 200 freestyle with a time 1:49.96. In the 50 freestyle, Fetters was Olivet’s top finisher in third-place at 22.98 seconds.
Despite a second-place finish in the 400 individual medley, Jaffee broke the school record in 4:30.46. Takahashi, Fetters and Meisner followed by taking second, third and fourth in the 100 butterfly. Takahashi’s time of 53.73 seconds set a school record.
Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo Central High School) won the 100 freestyle in 49.84 seconds. In the 100 backstroke, Aguirre and Waddell were second and third, respectively.
Jaffee ended his night with a first-place finish in the 500 freestyle. Johnson was second. In the final individual event, 100 breaststroke, the Comets swept the top three spots. Meisner was first in 1:01.18, followed by Ben Guins (Lansing Eastern High School) and Jon Cox (Battle Creek/Lakeview High School).
Olivet’s two 200 freestyle relay teams finished in second and third. The second-place relay was Aguirre, Powers, Riha and Takahashi, and they had a time of 1:31.04.
Andy Weiss (Fremont) was first in the one- and three-meter diving competitions with scores of 242.60 and 225.45, respectively. Steve Dastoli (Kalamazoo Central High School) was second in both diving events.
The Comets compete tomorrow, Nov. 6, against the Central Michigan University Club Team at 11 a.m. Next Saturday, Nov. 13, Olivet travels to Hillsdale to swim against Ohio Northern University at 1 p.m.
