The Olivet College men’s swimming team beat Calvin College, 182-114, tonight at the Upton Center Pool. With the win, the Comets have won 10 straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual meets.
The Olivet College men's swimming team beat Calvin College, 182-114, tonight at the Upton Center Pool. With the win, the Comets have won 10 straight Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual meets.
Olivet had three double winners. Sophomore Yury Bylina (Minsk, Belarus) won the 100- and 200-yard freestyle with times of :48.28 and 1:46.31, respectively. Senior Ananta Fetters (Fennville/Holland) touched the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle (:22.19) and 100-yard butterfly (:53.61). Sophomore Brian Johnson (Lansing/Eastern) took first in both backstroke events, finishing the 100 in :57.21 and 200 in :2:02.67.
Also winning individual events were sophomore Justin Hulsebos (Wayland), junior Brian Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio), freshman Sam Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio), sophomore Ryan Key (Phoenix, Ariz./Brophy Prep) and junior Dustin Meisner (Temperance/Erie Mason). Hulsebos was first in the one-meter dive (229.65). Brian Jaffee took the top place in the 500-yard freestyle (4:57.08), while younger brother, Sam was first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:20.08). Key claimed first in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:00.24), and Meisner was first in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:12.84).
The quartet of Fetters, Johnson, Meisner and senior Juan Aguirre (Queretaro, Mexico) finished first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.46). Freshman Nick Stone (Westland/John Glenn) recorded a pair of runner-up finishes in the 200-yard freestyle (1:50.66) and 200-yard backstroke (2:03.03).
Other second-place finishes were by Aguirre, 100-yard backstroke (:57.81); freshman Nathan Busscher (Hamilton/Holland Christian), 1,000-yard free (10:26.53); freshman Jon Hon (Alma), 100-yard breaststroke (1:05.57); Key, 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.14); junior Mitch Powers (Kalamazoo/Central), 50-yard freestyle (:22.26); junior Koji Takahashi (Etobicoke, Ontario/Silverthorn), 200-yard butterfly (2:01.98); and sophomore Andrew Wasson (Grand Ledge), one-meter dive (219.07).
The Comets return to the pool next Saturday, Nov. 11, when they compete in a non-conference dual meet against Ohio Northern University. The meet will be held at Hillsdale College.
