Day 2 of the 2009 MIAA Swimming and Diving Championships in the books
After the second day of the 2009 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships, the Olivet College men stand in third-place with 366 points, while the Comet women are in fifth-place with 248 points.
After the second day of the 2009 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Swimming and Diving Championships, the Olivet College men stand in third-place with 366 points, while the Comet women are in fifth-place with 248 points, just four points behind the host Saint Mary's College Belles. Hope leads sit on top of the men's standings with 605.50 points, while Calvin leads the women's race with 569.50 points. The championships are taking place at the University of Notre Dame's Rolfs Aquatic Center in South Bend, Indiana.
The Comet men had a pair of runner-up finishes. The first was by sophomore Kellen Beckwith (North Farmington/Farmington Hills) in the 100 backstroke with a NCAA Championships "A" cut time of 50.59 seconds. The other was by senior Shawn Bergman (Chelsea) in the 3-meter diving with 446.35 points.
The 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relays each broke the school record and finished in third-place. The 200 medley team of Beckwith, freshman Matt Marquette (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix), sophomore Rafe Maxwell (Bay City/Western) and senior Brad Voss (Lansing/Holt) clocked-in at 1:33.52. The 800 freestyle relay team of senior Steven Davis (Davidsville, Md./DeMatha), freshman Austin Munn (Pinckney), sophomore Rick Kinsey (Chelsea) and freshman Michael Conger (Plymouth) touched the wall in 6:59.99.
Olivet had four athletes place in the 400 individual medley, led by Davis' sixth-place time of 4:19.24. Freshman Zach Burgess (Holt) finished in eighth-place (4:27.68), followed by junior Sam Jaffee (Bowling Green, Ohio) in 13th (4:29.84) and Marquette in 14th (4:52.60).
In the 100 butterfly, Maxwell clocked-in at 51.79 seconds in the finals to place seventh. During the prelims, he broke the school record with a time of 51.36 seconds. Sophomore Mike Harden (St. Johns) finished in 13th-place in the 100 butterfly (:53.11).
Conger won the consolation heat of the 200 freestyle and narrowly missed breaking the school record by 7/100ths with a time of 1:43.64. Also placing in the 200 freestyle were Kinsey, 13th, 1:46.72; Munn, 14th, 1:47.17; and freshman Marshall Bouwman (Zeeland), 16th, 1:49.77.
In the 100 breaststroke, Marquette and Burgess finished 12th (1:02.79) and 15th (1:05.59), respectively. Other place winners in the 100 backstroke were freshman Mike Mette (Rockford) in 13th (:56.31) and Voss in 16th (:57.53). Senior Andrew Wasson (Grand Ledge) finished in fourth-place in the 3-meter diving with 377 points.
For the women, the 200 medley relay quartet of sophomore Jami Lingbeek (Plainwell), senior Lauren Siedlik (Livonia/Churchill), freshman Caitlin Lohr (Holland) and senior Kalee Redder (Grandville/Jenison) finished in fifth-place with a time of 1:52.46. With a fourth-place finish, the 800 freestyle relay team of freshman Jessica Howard (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead), senior Amy Johnson (Gaylord), Redder and senior Lisa Egelkraut (Battle Creek/Lakeview) shattered the school record by nearly five seconds (7:54.85).
Despite a sixth-place finish in the 200 freestyle, Johnson broke the school record with a time of 1:56.81. Senior Heather Michalsen (Plymouth/Salem) placed eighth in the 400 individual medley (4:58.27) and 12th in the 100 butterfly (1:01.66). Lingbeek was 12th in the 100 backstroke (1:01.86) and 14th in the 100 butterfly (1:02.79).
Olivet swimmers placed 12th, 13th and 15th in the 100 breaststroke. Siedlik was 12th (1:10.62), Tramper was 13th (1:11.16) and Egelkraut was 15th (1:12.81).
Saturday's final day of action begins with preliminaries at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m.
