Men's swimming and diving team beats Calvin, 154-131
The men's swimming and diving team closed out the dual meet portion of its schedule by beating Calvin, 154-131. The meet was the final home one for three seniors, Kellen Beckwith, Mike Harden and Rafe Maxwell.
OLIVET, Mich. -- The Olivet College men's swimming and diving team closed out the dual meet portion of its schedule by beating Calvin College, 154-131. The meet was the final home one for three seniors, Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington), Mike Harden (St. Johns) and Rafe Maxwell (Bay City/Western).
Beckwith won and broke the pool record in both backstroke events. His time in the 100 was 51.91 seconds, and his time in the 200 was 1:54.68. He also turned in the fastest time in the 200 individual medley, stopping the clock at 2:00.92.
Harden was second in the 50 freestyle (:22.02). Maxwell won the 200 butterfly in a pool record time of 1:57.25 and placed second in the 100 butterfly (:53.45). The senior trio joined with junior Matt Marquette (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix) for a first-place finish and pool record time of 1:36.19 in the 200 medley relay.
Individual event winners included freshman Brian Fiorillo (Southgate/Anderson) in the 50 free, :21.60; sophomore Brock Jackson (Sturgis) in the 100 free, :47.91; sophomore Joel Knight (Battle Creek/Lakeview) in the 100 butterfly, :56.02; and freshman Greg Kohler (Okemos) in the 500 freestyle, 4:56.39.
Marquette runner-up finishes in the breaststroke events (1:03.44 in the 100 and 2:23.27 in the 200). Freshman Cody Sanders (Battle Creek/Lakeview) placed second on both diving boards. He broke the school record on the one-meter with 301.90 points and narrowly missed the record on the three-meter with 300.21 points. The 200 freestyle relay quartet of junior Austin Munn (Pinckney), Harden, freshman Ben Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) and Fiorillo posted the quickest time at 1:26.47.
The Comets now turn their attention to 2011 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Championships Feb. 17-19 at the Jenison High School Aquatic Center. Action each day has preliminaries at 10 a.m., followed by finals at 6 p.m.
