ALBION, Mich. -- The Olivet College men's swimming and diving team defeated Albion College, 128-103, in a non-conference dual meet tonight against Albion College at the Dean Aquatic Center in Albion.
The Comets got off to a fast start by finishing 1-2 in the 400 medley relay, with the "B" team of Austin Munn (Pinckney), Adam Rhein (Leonard/Romeo), Ben Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) and Josh Mauk (Battle Creek/Lakeview) winning in 3:48.20. The "A" team of Joel Knight (Battle Creek/Lakeview), Matt Marquette (Kalamazoo/Loy Norrix), Zach Burgess (Dimondale/Holt) and Tyler Drake (Owosso) placed second in 3:49.73.
A pair of freshmen helped Olivet claim the top two finishing spots in the 1,650 freestyle. Greg Kohler (Okemos) won in 17:29.53, while Korey Mervenne (Jenison) was second in 17:47.37. In the 200 freestyle, Rafe Maxwell (Bay City/Western) finished first in 1:51.16, followed by Brian Fiorillo (Southgate/Anderson) in second, 1:54.91
Two more freshmen took the top two spots in the 50 freestyle. Nate Jones (Battle Creek/Lakeview) out-touched Tyler Drake (Owosso) by .18 seconds, 23:43-23.61. Nick Aldrich (DeWitt/St. Johns) was the top Comet finisher in the 200 individual medley, as he was second in 2:05.91.
Freshman Cody Sanders (Battle Creek/Lakeview) won the one-meter diving, scoring 274.65 points which was 75.05 points more than the runner-up finisher. In the 100 butterfly, a senior led the way as Mike Harden (St. Johns) finished first in 55.59 seconds and a freshman, Tyler Russell (Bay City/Central) took second in 56.96 seconds.
Burgess was first and beat his competitor in the 100 freestyle by .05 seconds, stopping the clock at 1:05.53. For the sixth event of the night, In the 100 backstroke. Brock Jackson (Sturgis) won in 57.29 seconds, followed by Mike Mette (Belmont/Rockford) in 58.72 seconds.
Olivet had the two fastest times in the 500 freestyle, with Ben Aldrich recording the quickest at 5:20.54, followed by Knight, 5:12.15. Sanders collected 264.80 points to win the three-meter diving.
Olivet will rest tonight and travel in the morning to swim a Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association dual meet at Alma College, starting at 1 p.m.
