Men’s swimming and diving team beats Albion, 148-127
Led by seven first-place finishes by freshmen student-athletes, the men’s swimming and diving team defeated MIAA rival Albion College, 148-127, today at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet.
OLIVET, Mich. -- Led by seven first-place finishes by freshmen student-athletes, the Olivet College men's swimming and diving team defeated Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) rival Albion College, 148-127, today at the Upton Center Pool in Olivet. Overall, Olivet turned in the fastest time/top score in 11 of 16 events.
Three freshmen were double winners. Ben Aldrich (St. Johns/DeWitt) won the 50 (:22.53) and 100 (:50.23) freestyle. Greg Kohler (Okemos) swept the distance freestyle events, winning the 500 (5:00.28) and 1,000 (10:24.96). Diving for the first time this season, Cody Sanders (Battle Creek/Lakeview) won both boards, collecting 249.85 points on the one-meter and 252.90 points on the three-meter. Winning the 100 freestyle was freshman Tyler Russell (Bay City/Central) in 2:13.31.
Other individual winners included sophomore Joel Knight (Battle Creek/Lakeview) in the 100 backstroke (:55.81), sophomore Josh Mauk (Battle Creek/Lakeview) in the 100 butterfly (:55.21) and sophomore Mike Mette (Rockford) in the 200 backstroke (2:04.32).
The 200 freestyle relay team of senior Mike Harden (St. Johns), freshman Brian Fiorillo (Southgate/Anderson), sophomore Brock Jackson (Sturgis) and senior Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington) was the first to finish, and broke the school record with a time of 1:26.27.
Olivet is now idle until Thursday-Saturday, Dec. 2-4 when it competes at the Calvin College Winter Invitational. The first day of action is timed finals in the evening, while the other two days will have preliminaries in the morning and finals at night.
