Men’s swimming and diving team loses to Hope, 146-134
The men’s swimming and diving team opened its MIAA schedule with 146-134 loss against defending league champion Hope today at the Dow Center in Holland.
HOLLAND, Mich. -- The Olivet College men's swimming and diving team opened its Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) schedule with 146-134 loss against defending league champion Hope College today at the Dow Center in Holland.
Kellen Beckwith (Farmington Hills/North Farmington) won two individual events in dominating fashion and also swam on both winning relays. Individually, he took first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 51.52 seconds, which was almost three seconds faster than the second-place finisher, and the 200 backstroke with a time of 1:56.38, which was more than five seconds quick than the runner-up finisher.
Joining him on the 200-yard medley relay were Josh Mauk (Battle Creek/Lakeview), Mike Harden (St. Johns) and Austin Munn (Pinckney), and their time was 1:36.51. Swimming with Beckwith on the 400 freestyle relay were Harden, Munn and Brock Jackson (Sturgis), and their time was 3:12.99.
Other individual event winners were Harden in the 50 freestyle, :22.14; Munn in the 100 freestyle, :48.82; Joel Knight (Battle Creek/Lakeview) in the 100 butterfly, :53.08; and Rafe Maxwell (Bay City/Western) in the 200 butterfly, 2:00.23. Maxwell edged Knight at the wall in the 200 fly by .01 seconds.
Olivet returns action next Friday, Nov. 12, when it competes in a non-conference dual meet against Ohio Northern University at Hillsdale College at 6 p.m. The next day, Saturday, Nov. 13, the Comets will welcome the Albion College Britons to the Upton Center Pool for a MIAA dual, beginning at 1 p.m.
