INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Olivet College's men's 200 medley relay and sophomore Brian Fiorillo (Southgate/Anderson) did not make it back to the finals at the 2012 NCAA Division III National Swimming and Diving Championships at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind.
Fiorillo swam the 50 freestyle in a school record time of 20.68 seconds. The time was three hundredths away from making it back to the finals.
"I am very proud of Brian," said Olivet Head Coach Jake Taber. "He swam the fastest 50 free in school history with an incredible swim. Brian has put together a great season and for the second year in a row, he has dropped considerable amounts of time. I feel his best swimming is still ahead of him."
Fiorillo joined with junior Nick Edgar (Lansing/Everett), freshman Phil Barone, Jr. (Perrysburg, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales) and senior Mike Harden (St. Johns) on the 200 medley relay. Their time was 1:33.38, which was 18th fastest. This relay made school history, as it was the first time Olivet had a relay compete at the national championship meet.
"Bummer is one word to describe not getting the relay back to the finals," said Taber. "But it was a good experience for the guys. Three of the swimmers on this relay will return next year, and I am sure they will work very hard to get back to the national championships."
Olivet still has swims left at the national championships. Tomorrow, the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays will be held. On Friday, the 800 freestyle relay will take place, along with Edgar in the 100 backstroke and Barone, Jr. in the 100 breaststroke. In Saturday's final day of action, Fiorillo will swim in the 100 freestyle, and the 400 freestyle relay will also be contested.
