Track and field teams open outdoor schedule at Dick Small Invitational
The Olivet College men’s and women’s track and field teams kicked-off the outdoor portion of their schedules by finishing in third-place today at the 18th Annual Dick Small Invitational, hosted by Defiance (Ohio) College.
DEFIANCE, Ohio – The Olivet College men's and women's track and field teams kicked-off the outdoor portion of their schedules by finishing in third-place today at the 18th Annual Dick Small Invitational, hosted by Defiance (Ohio) College.
Women
Led by junior Sara Wegener (Lansing/Lansing Catholic), the women's team collected 127 points. Defiance was first with 216 points, followed by Adrian with 183.
Wegener finished first in the shot put (11.56m), discus throw (36.30m) and hammer throw (40.89m). Her throw in the hammer broke her own school record by almost two meters. The previous mark was 38.09m.
Olivet's other winners were on the track. Sophomore Cassie Ciaravino (Lapeer/East) won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.54 seconds. Junior Rachael Wagner (Clinton Twp/Fraser) was first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:04.12.
Men
The men's team posted five first-place finishes and scored 120 total points. Adrian College was first with 206 points, followed by the host Yellow Jackets with 174 points.
On the track, freshman Damien Johnson (Battle Creek/Central) took first-place in the 100 and 200-meter dashes with times of 11.44 and 23.55 seconds, respectively. He also teamed with sophomore Billyle Alman (Lansing/Okemos), sophomore Henry Pettway (East Lansing) and freshman Travon Tatum (Battle Creek/Lakeview) for a first-place finish in the 4x100-meter relay with a time of 44.36 seconds.
Olivet's other top spot finish was turned in by the 4x400-meter relay team of Alman, freshman Tyler Britten (Mendon), freshman Demetrius Washington (Berrien Springs) and sophomore Jalen Weaver (Albion), and their time was 3:31.24.
In the field events, Pettway recorded a 6.21 meter leap in his first attempt of the long jump, and the mark held up for a first-place finish.
The Comets are back in action next Saturday, April 6, at the Adrian College All-American Invitational. Field events will start at 10 a.m., followed by running events at 11 a.m.
