Former NCAA All-American Andrew Benkovsky is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Olivet College cross country/track & field programs in 2019-20.
A 2015 Olivet graduate, Benkovsky was a member of the Comet cross country and track & field teams for four seasons. As a freshman and sophomore, he was a member of the swimming & diving team. Benkovsky had his most success on the track. As a senior, he placed second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2015 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association Field Day.
Shattering the school record with a time of 9:05.36 in the steeplechase at a last chance meet, Benkovsky qualified for the NCAA Division III National Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Canton, N.Y. In the finals at the national championships, he broke the school record one more time at 9:04.94 to place seventh and earn NCAA Division III All-American honors.
“Having Andrew as a part of our coaching staff is a huge asset for our program,” stated Olivet head cross country/track & field coach Karen Lutzke. “His passion and desire to grow our program is evident. As an All-American for Olivet College, he knows what it takes to compete at this level.”
A native of Eaton Rapids, Benkovsky also excelled in the classroom during his time at Olivet. He graduated with a 3.6 grade point average and was a four-time member of the MIAA Academic Honor Roll. As a senior, Benkovsky was named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association All-Academic Individual Team.
“I am excited to be coaching and recruiting with Coach Lutzke,” said Benkovsky. “I have already learned a lot in just a few weeks working with her, and I know she will help me develop as a coach in the years to come. I am passionate about the sport of running and want to build the program, and guide the student-athletes to become the best they can be.”
